Chowchilla Mountain Road, off Highway 49S, is one of the original stage routes into Yosemite – stages ran from the railroad at Raymond over Chowchilla Mountain and down into Wawona. Once you get up away from civilization, you encounter a maze of roads, of varying drivability, but all fine for hiking, connecting to various peaks to the north and south. If you can figure out the cryptic or missing road markers, you can still drive into Wawona – or drive or hike. Along the way is the Summit Campground, around 5,000’ elevation, if you care to spend a night away from the madding crowd. There is also a road from Highway 41 at Fish Camp up to Summit Campground and Chowchilla Mountain Road.
